Well, summer has officially arrived in Seville! As the temperatures start to creep up to highs of 40 degrees celsius and the end of uni exams is just weeks away, it’s hard not to dream about lazy days at the beach – or summer travels! ✈️

Whether you are staying at home, or traveling, we have some warm weather English idioms that are perfect to use this summer (or anytime)!

🌞 A ray of sunshine

First up is A ray of sunshine, this refers to a joyful person who makes others feel happy, especially in a difficult situation.

“I always love to see my friend in Marbella, she is such a ray of sunshine!”.

Who is a ray of sunshine in your life?

Tip! the Spanish equivalent could be: “Eres un sol”.

🌞 A place in the sun

A place in the sun refers to a good or lucky position.

“He’s a hard worker, always first to arrive at the office, and last to leave, he’s earned his place in the sun”.

Aren’t we all looking for our place in the sun? Whether at school, work, or in life.

🌞 Under the sun

Another idiom related to the sun, in this case, under the sun means “in existence” or “on earth”.

“I’ve tried everything under the sun to fix our relationship, but I just can’t make it work!”.

When you’ve tried every possible solution or fix known, that’s when you know you’ve tried everything under the sun.

🌞 Beat the heat

This is an idiom that you can definitely use this summer: to beat the heat means to take measures to stay cool, comfortable and avoid the hot weather.

“I’m going to Cadiz this weekend, I need to be at the beach to beat this heat”.

“If you’re looking for Jose, you’ll find him at the chiringuito or surfing, he’s such a beach bum”.

In this context, a beach bum refers to a relaxed person who habitually spends time on, or near a beach – any time of the year! Curiously, you can change this idiom and also call someone a “ski bum” which refers to a person who spends most of their time around ski resorts.

🌞 Life’s like a beach

To say life is like a beach means life is easy, relaxed and enjoyable. It suggests a carefree and pleasant existence, similar to the feeling one might have while at the beach.
